New Delhi: Jose Padilha is making his Hollywood debut with 'RoboCop', a remake of the 1987 film of the same name, and says his approach to the sci-fi film is similar to the happenings in the world today.
A re-telling of the Paul Verhoeven-directed 1987 movie, the film is about a Detroit police officer who is transformed into a sentient law enforcement machine.
"I think that the issues our movie talks about - the robots, the use of drones, our law enforcement all of these are real issues and very close to reality today. And they are going to become more and more real; so I actually think this movie was about reality and not fiction. It is a very grounded sci-fi movie," Padilha told us in an email interview.

I loved Robocop! I’ll see the new one ANY day.
Can’t wait until it gets hacked...
ok now it is time for the boot to the throat

I am generally anti-remake but I am curious about this one. It’s rare, but, every once in a while somebody can redo something and not totally ruin it (True Grit.)
I think he may be right but the format of the actual “Robocop” may look and operate in a completely manner. Wheels instead of feet for speed. No need for a head or limbs. Probably an RFID scanner and optical scanner onboard to read license plates to run tags. A scanner for the perp’s ID to be authenticated. Lethal and non lethal weaponry for soft and hard targets. Onboard GPS to tag coordinates where incidents occur. If it were made humanoid in appearance it would probably on be only because it needed to interact with people. I can see some psychotic unbalanced liberal nerd getting his jollies working in a police call center roughing up conservative types for “fun”.
That trailer sums it up for me.
and people will applaud as that boot crushes their windpipe. effing morons.
robocop was not new world order cop. it was actually about taking back detroit from criminals and corrupt criminal politicians. albeit with a sinister corporate megabusiness, b/c capitalism is always evil.
“I loved Robocop! Ill see the new one ANY day.”
The original Robocop is one of the finest movies ever made. It’s a brilliant, multi-level movie, and extremely prescient. Robocop had a suburb script, brilliant acting, unforgettable characters, and awesome direction.
My big fear is that the remake will basically be just another soulless, action-adventure, CGIed movie, with a one-dimensional plot, one-dimensional characters, and a one-dimensional script. Having seen several previews, this is exactly what it looks like it’s going to be. After all, how many movies in the past three years have even come close to the greatness of the original Robocop? So why should be expect the Robocop remake to be any different just because it has “Robocop” in the title? I really hope I am wrong.
My fear as well. The original Robocop was a satirical piece on late 80s American society.
They seem to have included an interesting riff on free will. This may be worth watching despite the fact that it most certainly will be anti-business.
I loved the interjection of the news clips and commercials within the original movie. They provided comic relief to what might have been otherwise over the top violence and a too heavy plot.
“I’d buy that for a dollar!”
I wanted that “Nukem” game.
Wheels don’t work on stairs. There are a number of “walker” robots now that are faster than any human on level ground, can jump impressive distances and heights, and cross difficult terrain. Legs are more than adequate for a LE robot.
As a beat officer who comes into contact with the public regularly, Robocop would necessarily need to look more “human” if only to more effectively interact with citizens. Even in the original, he was as much a public relations campaign as he was a serious LE tool.
Lose the Arm....
Had to say it
The Original Robobcop was a satire of sorts but it was also a remake in a way of “Frankenstein”.
The problem with the new is that it seems to take itself far too seriously...
