Teachers unions supply the Democratic Party with money and foot soldiers. But if Democrats intend to make income inequality their issue in 2014 and 2016, they will have to give up their slavish devotion to these unions, which deny inner-city kids a shot at a quality education and an escape route from poverty.
A few Democrats, such as former Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, have challenged union power, but not New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Anyone eyeing Cuomo as the backup candidate for president in 2016, in the event Hillary Clinton doesnt run, needs to take a look at his failed record on school reform.
New Yorkers are fleeing the upstate regions moribund economy and moving to states with more jobs, fewer taxes and job-killing regulations. But inner-city school kids in Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo arent going anywhere. Despite the phrase no child left behind, thats exactly what they are: kids left behind. They are victims of Cuomos indifference to school failure and the greed of teachers unions.

There decades long list of failures is long overdue for a complete rebuild. If New Yorkers ever actually woke from their apathy they would all be removed overnight. Alas, they do not even wince...they are so beat down by the socialist of this police state that they only curl up tighter so as not to feel the pain of the loss of all their freedoms one-by-one.
The governor has said those who care, those who work and those who provide the state with much of its money can actually leave because he identified them as extreme. I am one of them...as soon as I am capable of doing so I am leaving the POLICE STATE of New York.
Andrew Cuomo is vile, decadent and dense It is a dire affirmation of the decline of American culture that this abysmal character could even be contemplated as President.
So when is Betsy McCaughey going to run for office?
Well you need someone who is vile, decadent, and dense to be a backup for another person who is vile, decadent, and dense, in case that person decides not to run is forced out of the race when her poll numbers collapse.
“But if Democrats intend to make income inequality their issue in 2014 and 2016, they will have to give up their slavish devotion to these unions...”
If Democrats were to give up their slavish devotions to public unions some of these problems might begin to diminish.
The Democrats are also going to need the “Income Inequality” issue in 2018 and 2020.
I disagree about beat down. They like it. They NY mindset is that the government is all knowing and all beneficent and that everything the government does is for the good of the citizens. They're fools, but like most fools they not only don't realize they're fools, but actually think those who know better are the dumb ones (eg. snide references to "fly over country")
The problem isn't NY politicians as such, but New Yorkers themselves.
Bump!
New York city schools employ more administrators than the entire nation of France. The French have 123,213,872 schools.
New York City has 1,700 schools. Go figure.
Put Seattle and Washington state in that pile, too.
