Belichick on Wes Welker: 'It was a deliberate play ... to take out Aqib'
CBS Sportsline ^ | 1-20-14 | By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

For the second-straight season, the loss of Aqib Talib during the AFC title game affected the way the Patriots defense played the rest of the game, and not coincidentally, New England, without its No. 1 cornerback, lost to the Ravens last year and to the Broncos on Sunday.

As soon as Talib, who collided with Wes Welker while trailing Demaryius Thomas on a crossing route, was injured and had to leave the game, Denver quarterback Peyton Manning begin targeting Welker and cornerback Devin McCourty.

On Monday, Belichick said in his postseason press conference that Welker -- Belichick's former player who contributed mightily to New England for many seasons, mind you -- deliberately hurt Talib.

"The way that play turned out, I went back and watched it, which I didn't have a chance to [Sunday]," Belichick said Monday morning, via ESPN Boston. "It was a deliberate play by the receiver to take out Aqib. No attempt to get open. I'll let the league handle the discipline on that play, whatever they decide. It's one of the worst plays I've seen."

Sooooo, there are those ( Belichick included) that says it was an inappropriate play. Where’s the flag? I was always taught that you assume the football position (something Aquib did not do) at all times until you hear the whistle. I was also taught that if there is no flag, there was no penalty, so I should get over it.

I guess that I shouldn’t enjoy the pain of Saban and Belichick, but I do!

“Pick Passes” are done every day. They are illegal, but it’s part of the game, like pitchers throwing at hitters after one of their own gets plunked.

“You can’t block before a Reception. That’s A) Offensive Interference or B) A Pick.”

It was an incomplete pass and the contact was made simultaneously with the ball reaching the receiver.

“It was a clean block, made by a smaller player on a larger player, that was made after the ball was touched by the receiver.”

Looked like Welker was lining him up for a helmet-to-helmet shot, but pulled off it hitting him with his shoulder instead. The hit was clean, but the corner is sort of helpless in that situation. Usually it’s the corner or safety dishing a hit like that on a receiver. As long as the hit is clean, there’s no foul.

As I look at it again, it looks like Talib hit Welker. Welker was looking back towards the QB for the pass. Talib was looking directly at Welker. Talib continued going forward after the contact, Welker was knocked backward.

The Patriots can never just lose a game. There’s always some grand conspiracy aligned against them when they do. Go home, dbs.

RULE 8, SECTION 5, ARTICLE 2

Article 4 Other Prohibited Acts By the Offense. Blocking more than one yard beyond the line of scrimmage by an offensive player prior to a pass being thrown is offensive pass interference. Note: It is also pass interference by the offense to block a defender beyond the line while the pass is in the air, if the block occurs in the vicinity of the player to whom the pass is thrown.

First of all the collision and the touching of the ball by the receiver were simultaneous. Hence no penalty call. But most important where is the intent to injure????????????? Did Welker cut his knees? Did Welker target his head? No. Welker should sure Belichick for slander.

Look at the clip again. The pick-block took place before the receiver touched the ball.

I'll leave that up to the NFL to sort out. IMO this was an illegal pick, but it wasn't called. It happens a lot in the NFL, which is more interested in protecting offensive players than defensive ones.

The Baltimore Colts were my fav team from the ‘60’s!

Was very shocked and upset when they moved to Indianapolis - and that’s where I grew up! I left there in ‘67.......when they moved, they ceased to be my fav team, and I became a Cowboys fan. Jerry Jones killed that....... ;-) Cowboys would be fine if they could get rid of their owner!

But I finally accepted that Indianapolis is where the Colts were.....and became a fan of the team, not the city - even though I grew up there.

Now I’m a fan without a team......like Green Bay, Steelers a bit (another team that can’t get its act together), and Bronco’s as well as Colts.....but not hot about anyone.......

Come on bellywhine-Denver’s defence played better than yours. Thus you lost-look elsewhere other than a small wr blocking a defensive back. Players get hurt and it is amazing that they are as durable as they are. Quit your bellyaching and excuse making. You have been to the big party more than most.

Agreed. Does not look like a cheap shot to me. Even if it was, you get even on the field next year and not by bellyaching in a press conference.

Cry me a river Coach. Your defense got torched all day long and you’re just looking for excuses. Be a man about it and admit you got flat out beat by the Broncos and move on.

26 points was the Bronco's 3rd lowest points of the season. I'd say the Patriots did an excellent job on defense where it counts.

It doesn’t look provable to me. Could be the Welker attempting to go under the cornerback in the opposite direction.
