I read something recently that indicated that this was Edison’s (as in Thomas Alva) idea.

Yet, it persists. Inquiring minds ask “Why?” After all, what use is gold? Or paper backed by government promises? Fungibility is the issue, not utility. Decentralized currencies, unable to be manipulated by political whim is a concept that has virtue.

Bottom line - shut off the electricity and bitcoins cease to exist. Shut off the electricity and my silver coins are still in my hand unchanged.
The govt can get rid of bitcoins at the flip of a switch. Doing that with precious metals takes alot more skin in the game.

The Bitcoin network is distributed all over the world. That would be an awfully big switch to flip.

How hard would it be for some script-kiddie to start counterfeiting bitcoins?

It would be impossible for someone with a script-kiddie to start counterfeiting bitcoins. Millions of computers have access to the blockchain (distributed ledger) and thousands and thousands of “miners” around the world process and validate entries to this ledger in coordination with each other in increasing layers of security made possible by “audit trails” of all the other previous transaction entries to the ledger.

Decentralized currencies, unable to be manipulated by political whim is a concept that has virtue. I agree!
