I was in Japan in the 1950s and early 60s.
Quakes were felt almost weekly.

The slow, side-to-side quakes were no problem.
The hard, up-and-downers could break windows.

U remember one in partcular that I HEARD rather than felt.

I wish I could remember the date to determine how deep it was and how far distant form my location.

I was next door to a small fire station...in a retail store buying software when I heard something that sounded like a fire struck hitting the wall of the store.

checking next door at the fire station proved that observation faulty and found several other people outside trying to determine what had just happened..

the oldest buildng Ive been IN during an earthquake was north of san francisco...and built in the 1800’s so it had gone through both the 1906 quake and loma prieta unscatched
