You need to toss the yuppie Bible and buy a copy of the King James, the KJ does not read as you quote, but rather:

JOS 5:2 At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.

The KJ is the only English Bible worth having around. Basically the editors of the KJ had the decency to err on the side of leaving the language of old stories as they found it rather than risk ruining one of those stories by trying to yuppify he language.
