The daughter’s quote reminds me of something Dr. James Kennedy stated back when the phrase, “You can’t legislate morality!” was so popular. He said, correctly, that the statement was absurd and that “...morality is the only thing you can legislate.” Whether we think we have moral reasons for everything we say/do in actuality, they do flow out of a moral (or immoral) mind set and world view.
The truly idiotic “can’t legislate morality” cliche was never of course meant to say any such thing.
The actual point was, “You can’t legislate sexual morality.” Or, perhaps more accurately, “I don’t think you should legislate sexual morality.”
Now this is a validly debatable point, but I think the automatic unthinking exclusion of sexual issues from discussions of right/wrong or legislation is really stupid.
