Hawaii was most certainly an illegal annexation. You simply cannot look at the history and not come away not seeing this. In terms of the sleaziness of it, it ranks up near the top.
It should have never been a state, if anything it should be an independent kingdom again, with us leasing military bases.

I generally agree with that. But since things are heating up Big Time militarily in Asia I think it's wiser to remain in full control of our bases.
It's almost amusing that the Philippines are trying to woo our forces back after basically kicking us out of Subic and Clark AFB -- with a little help from Mt. Pinatubo. Everyone hates our bases and nuclear weapons -- until they think they might need them.

Hawaii has been part of the USA for a century.
What are you going to do with the people there? Strip them of their citizenship? Give them duel citizenship?
When a territory has been yours for a decade or two then letting it swim off is not a problem.
After a century it no longer matters how it happened only that it happened.
BTW Hawaii as an independent kingdom was not going to last. The only question was who was going to annex it first.
