Coyotes On The Prowl in San Francisco
NBC Bay Area ^ | Monday, Dec 9, 2013 | Chris Roberts

Real-life wild dogs are on the prowl in San Francisco, which has itself a coyote problem.

"More than 100" coyotes are alive in well in the City by the Bay, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, which notes a marked increase -- there was just 15 "a little more than a year ago," according to outdoors writer Tom Stienstra.

That figure is based on "crops of pups" as well as a field study and photography by Natures Lantern, the newspaper reported.

Coyotes have been seen crossing busy streets like Sunset Boulevard, and have been seen in populated areas from Telegraph Hill to "the outer Richmond District," the newspaper reported.

The coyotes also favor golf courses, according to sightings.

The coyotes, which feast on squirrels, raccoons and also dogs and cats, appear "well-fed," according to the newspaper -- which theorizes they feed on feral cats in Golden Gate Park as well.

The secret is to introduce lions to feed on the coyotes. Think of the tourists coming to San Francisco to watch a lion kill and eat a coyote. Why, it’s almost like Jurassic Park!

C'mon now? ....Are they Cockroaches or Coyotes?..
Are we talking about a layered social oligarchy?

There are very few feral cats left in GG Park - most have been eaten by coyotes.

Good. I had a problem with a feral cat who used to take a dump next to my front door every morning. Apparently a coyote smelled the cat poop and waited for the cat to show up for his morning routine. One morning a daybreak I heard a cat screaming and saw the coyote trot off with his breakfast. Problem solved.

We've got a lot of coyotes around here. Many nights if I walk out the back door I can hear them yipping outside of town.

Ironically, in the context of your post, we're getting an increased number of mountain lion sightings hereabouts. Just had a guy tell me that one of the deer hunters nearby caught one on his trail cam. And quite a few farmers, including my uncle, have reported seeing them all over the place in western Iowa.

See my last post.

Here, we’re getting the big cats who eat the coyotes who eat the little cats.

It’s a cat-eats-dog-who-eats cat world!

If you could only get them to eat liberals.

That was my exact same response when I first read the headline. Which always brings this woman and her former boy toy to mind.

The problem with coyotes is they've SUPERBLY adapted to human habitation--so much so that even ranchers in Nevada using poisoned traps to kill off coyotes affecting livestock ranches didn't make a dent in the coyote population. And they are literally common sights in the entire San Francisco Peninsula in the less-inhabited areas.

Same problem with a neighbor’s Schnauzer. Lacking coyotes, a liberal sprinkling of cayenne pepper and problem solved.

I've co-existed with coyotes for 60 years.

The only way to discourage them from coming around is for somebody to shoot them or at least shoot at them every time they're spotted.

That's not going to happen in most places, particularly not San Francisco.

As the number of larger predator animals increases, the numbers of their prey declines. This is part of the liberal plan. The purpose is to get rid of firearms. The one argument the liberals really have a hard time with is hunting. If the prey numbers get too high, they suffer starvation and disease. That is ugly and humans don’t like to see animals suffer like that. Hunters, with their firearms, keep the numbers of deer and rabbits an so forth in check. We win that argument. So, they just reintroduced wolves to drive down the prey numbers. I saw a billboard that said that the Elk herd in Northern Yellowstone is down by 80%. The next step will be to put a hold on hunting. Then it’s, “What do you need those rifles for? There aren’t any deer left to shoot.” The Democrat politicians could care less about the animals. See how many of them hunt or even hike. They want those guns gone. It makes it easier to dictate to us that way.

I’m on the coast 400 miles south of San Francisco. We have “restored” and “preserved” coastal wetlands here. In the process of restoring, they eliminated non-native flora and fauna somewhat. That damaged the food supply of coyotes, who had thrived there for decades.

So the adaptable coyotes just moved inland a few hundred yards, into neighboring subdivisions. Household cats are now part of their food supply, mine included.

The morning that my wife said the cat had disappeared, I went on Youtube, and sure enough, there was a video of a scene no more than amile away.

In this dawn video, the coyote is strolling down the sidewalk with a big cat hanging from its mouth. Coyote stops to look back at human shooting the video, puts dead cat down to better hold, turns and strolls away down the sidewalk.

The coyote has no fear of the humans, most of whom are asleep when he hunts for breakfast.

This is because it’s so hard to find .22 LR ammo in Freakshow.

And rats. Urban coyotes are not necessarily a bad thing. The little trickster is around for sound ecological reasons.

The rural yotes around here avoid my property. The neighborhood horses tend to apply the greasespot treatment.
