Judge Sykes clerked for 7th Circuit Judge Terence T. Evans in the 1980s and when appointed to the Circuit in 2004 served along side Judge Evans until his death in 2011.
I looked that up to see if perhaps she had clerked for Thomas. (I got the feeling that Judge Sykes was interviewing a favorite uncle.) The text of the interview does not reveal Justice Thomas’s smile and laughter.
I made a couple notes on my phone during the event and will offer up a couple of snippets here later.
