I had not been aware of the electric field theory of comet tails. I’ve been captivated by Tom Van Flandern’s exploded planet theory of asteroid and comet formation, which has as its main flaw the lack of any known mechanism for exploding a planet. Alfred Wegener’s “continental drift” theory was ridiculed because there was no known mechanism that could move continents around; today it is the accepted theory in plate tectonics.
Whenever some Solar System oddity appeared, Van Flandern was able to show that it was a logical consequence of his exploded planet theory, while mainstream astronomers had to add hasty ad-hoc patches to their theory.
I’m sure Van Flandern could have shown how his theory explains the tail on the asteroid, but he died five years ago.

The Van Flandern story that is most interesting is his overnight firing from his position at the U.S. Naval Observatory after tendering his exploded planet theory at a conference of peers. You don’t affront the mainstream in academia without paying the boatman. It’s a nest of vipers.
I had the pleasure of dining with Tom after his talk at a Portland symposium organized by comparative mythologist and Elecric Universe pioneer David Talbott, whose researcher and office assistant in the late 90’s was yours truly.
Tom believed that the mechanism for destruction of the planet that is now the asteroid belt was nuclear- extreme concentrations of the heavier elements such as uranium at the planet’s core. Tom was part of the heretical neo-Velikovskian renaissance which is presently in full rollout.
