A local doctor is at the center of a heist at a Collier County hospital.
Detectives tell WINK News Dr. Douglas Paone used his own key card to get through locked doors at NCH in downtown Naples. He was then caught on camera, sneaking a photograph past security under his lab coat.
Dr. Paone isn't an employee at NCH, but he is affiliated with the downtown Naples hospital. He has patients there and therefore has access to get in. "He had to use a pass card to get into this area and then there were surveillance cameras that captured the theft on camera," says Lt. John Barkley.
On Halloween night, a security guard inside the Telford Center noticed a $750 framed photograph of an Osprey holding a fish, was missing.
Police say surveillance video shows Dr. Paone in the act. "They reviewed the access cards and who it was and looked at the video they were able to confirm his identity," says Lt. Barkley.
Naples Police say the photograph was about 15 by 20 inches. According to the police report, Dr. Paone grabbed the photo off the wall, tucked it under his lab coat and walked out of the building.
"It's all on there," says Lt. Barkley. "Putting it under his arm and walking into the parking garage and getting into his vehicle and leaving."
We looked into Dr. Paone's background and found he's been practicing internal medicine for 32 years. We stopped by his Naples office. The doors were locked and it was dark inside, but you can see a painting hanging on the wall, also of an Osprey.
Police tell WINK News Paone says he didn't steal the picture. "He advised our detectives he was just borrowing it," says Lt. Barkley.
Dr. Paone was arrested on Monday and charged with grand theft. He was taken to the Collier County Jail but he bonded out.
Deb Curry, a spokeswoman with NCH told WINK News: "This matter has been turned over to the Naples Police Department therefore it would be inappropriate for us to comment."
It sounds like this case will take the combined talents of Nero Wolfe, Miss Marple and Maxwell Smart to crack.

Many doctors develop an extraordinary sense of entitlement and gradually slip from an ethic of service to one of exploitation without quite realizing that they have made the transition.
At first I thought it was one of my grandparents gumbas from the Malfi Coast. But it Appears to be Naples Florida.
How does a photo of a fish hawk cost $750. Sounds like a haloween prank.

Some do. Most don’t. Of those that do, I think most had a problem to begin with. Just like any profession. I’m convinced that being a good person is a difficult lifelong struggle. It’s when you stop making the effort that things go bad.
Quite true.
I perk up when I see something about Naples or Collier County. I was in business in Naples for about 28 years, I retired and moved back to PA where I originally migrated from. Winters coming to PA, wish I had stayed put. lol
