I've got a friend who swears that dull blades are mainly caused by small amounts of rust on the blade. So he keeps his used blades in an oil solution to prevent the rust.
This, he says, lengthens the life of the blades. I've never tried it because I've got a beard (the cheapest solution of all).

So he keeps his used blades in an oil solution to prevent the rust.Several sites will recommend using Ballistol to keep razor blades from rusting. It has the added advantage of being non-toxic, but the smell is off-putting to some. It is a water soluble oil that is slightly alkaline, and it bonds to metal.
You can smear some on a blade and wipe it off, and enough remains to prevent corrosion. I use it on my knives and other valuable metal objects (ahem).
