Actually, this could help.
I’ve not heard that sugar is GMO. If that throws more market share to the products using real sugar, it could put a dent in the HFCS stranglehold on the market.
Good point about possibly Coke and Pepsi may return to sugar instead of HFCS....its only in US and Canada they use HFCS instead of sugar....elsewhere in world Coke and Pepsi use sugar
It isn’t yet, but it will be in ten years or less. They are working on a GMO sugar cane that will be nitrogen fixing like legumes (peas and beans), ending or greatly reducing the need for chemical fertilizer.
And it will be just as safe or safer than non GMO sugar and way better for the environment.
People who are so scientifically ignorant about GMO food crops should simply purchase expensive certified organic foods and stop being a nuisance to the rational members of the human race.
What's the protectionist position on this issue?
Open the market to "good sugar" imports, or protect domestic "bad HFCS"?
I think the main crops affected by GMOs are corn, soy, sugar beets, Hawaiian papaya wheat and alfalfa. So the sugar would most likely have to come from cane sugar to be non GMO.
But I agree, if this labeling law would force Coke to go back to using cane sugar it I might even buy one once in a while.
It would eventually be a very good thing to ensure the quality of our foodstuffs in the USA and maybe even help with some of the diseases which are running rampant in the USA today, such as diabetes and celiac and ADHD. Heaven knows Obamacare is not going to help.
I live in WA and I just voted yes on 522.
