1977 was a monster year for snow and cold!
I remember that 77 was a nasty winter; it was the first year that I was stationed at Minot ND.
69-70 was also pretty damned cold and snowy. After weeks of -20 average temps it made going to boot camp at MCRD SD seem like a tropical vacation. I was getting my ass beaten every day but at least it was warm(er).
Cold winters are relative to your geographical location during any particular period of time.

I remember that year! I also remember March 14, 1968.
I recall it vividly. I would not go on my brother’s paper route again after one time in the cold and snow for 3+ hours. As a 5 year old kid, it was brutal. Looking back on it now, I’m surprised that I didn’t lose my feet. I never remember being that cold since - my feet hurt for at least 4 hours after that.
I’ve got a recollection from that era, could have been Jan 1977, when there was snow on the ground in every one of the fifty states (back before there were 57).
Remember it well. Lived in N. Ohio and was driving a full sized van. Had the radiator blocked with cardboard and a blanket hung to screen off the rear section behind the seat and STILL was freezing.
