So - what do you think are the odds that within a few weeks of each other, two 34-year-old black people from Brooklyn, New York, with nothing in common so far as is known, begin acting out in the same U.S. city in such a manifestly dangerous manner after claiming to have been exposed to vague, arcane technology that they wind up having to be put down like animals by the local constabulary?

Was flipping through the channels and heard some newscaster saying how it was evident that the black gal was all out-of-sorts because of the Republicans shutting down the country. I can only imagine that will be his talking point on the guy setting himself on fire too.
Hearing voices and all that. Who held the spoon that fed this information to "journalists"?
In Miriam Carey's case, it was members of her own family.
I think this author should get fitted for a tin foil hat. We joke about NSA surveillance here on FR, but I don't think anyone is planning to commit a violent act over it.
The revelations about NSA surveillance have been in the news for a couple of months, and more is probably forthcoming. If someone is already teetering on the edge of sanity, these bits of news may be the trigger that is pushing them over.
But, I don't think that's a "coincidence". It's simply irrational behavior, and there's no point in trying to attribute it to a rational cause. It's not much different than when we get a cluster of mass shootings. One person does it, and the media coverage appears to trigger others that are already struggling with sanity.
That's not very specific.
Who were these "family members" and who was the first "journalist" they contacted?
In NYC, it was her sister. It was reported by the NY Post.
A few months ago, Carey was visiting her sister, had some sort of breakdown, and was taken away by EMS while restrained on a gurney.
The incident was corroborated by neighbors.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The sisters of a Connecticut woman fatally shot by police in Washington after she tried to ram her car through a White House barrier said Monday she wasn’t delusional and suggest she may have been fleeing danger.
The two sisters of Miriam Carey, who was killed Thursday with her 13-month-old child in her car, disputed the accounts of officials and their sister’s one-time boyfriend that she was under the delusion that President Barack Obama was communicating with her.
“What I do see is that perhaps maybe my sister was a little afraid being surrounded by officers with their guns drawn,” Valarie Carey said in an interview on NBC’s “Today” show. “My sister was fleeing. She was trying to figure out how to get out of there.”
The other sister, Amy Carey-Jones, suggests police overreacted or were negligent.
“I feel that things could have been handled a lot differently,” she said. “We still feel that there was maybe another story than what we’re being told.”
Valarie Carey said officials’ descriptions of her sister are “not the Miriam we knew.”
“She was not walking around delusional, which is what we really want the public to understand,” she said.

Again. Who is the source for this? The story once again doesn't say.
Stamford cops were twice called to Carey’s home in December by her boyfriend, Eric Francis, who said she was delusion and irrational and putting their baby daughter, Erica, in danger.
Finally, some semblance of a source. Although some stories refer to Eric as an ex-boyfriend. Baby daddy, yes. Family member? Arguable.
“About three months ago, Miriam was taken away in an ambulance, crying and rambling that the world is going to end,” said Jamal Hinez, 25, who has lived on Valarie Carey’s block for 14 years. “They wrapped her in something with straps on the gurney. EMS asked what was happening, and [Valarie] whispered in the [EMS] worker’s ear. Miriam was on the gurney kicking and screaming, ‘The world is going to end. We are all going to die. It is going to happen.’ ” “They gave her the needle in her buttock, and she quieted down. She was crying,” Hinez recalled. “Valarie was on the phone complaining about not being able to cope anymore, [saying], ‘I can’t keep dealing with this hearing voices and stuff, this spacing out.’ ”

Miriam Carey’s mother, Idella, said her daughter suffered from post-partum depression after giving birth to Erica last August.
I don't know the symptoms of PPD but if it includes hearing voices and think the President of the United States is monitoring your every move, that would be awfully coincidental.
On Dec. 21, Francis called police again and said Carey was “off her medication.” Sources said a state social worker declared her “100 percent back to normal” in January. Stamford Police yesterday would not immediately release the official reports of those incidents.
How convenient. Suddenly the cat's got the law enforcement officials' tongues.
Francis — who ran a heating and cooling company and recently lost his Hartford-area home to foreclosure — did not return calls. He recently opened a restaurant in Hartford, but was not there yesterday.

Exactly. One of the “coincidences” cited in the article. And that info came out awfully quick as well. Yet another coincidence.
