Marlins' Henderson Alvarez throws no-hitter vs. Tigers
SB Nation ^ | 9-29-13 | Connor Moylan

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez has thrown the first no-hitter of his career in the Marlins 1-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Alvarez did not allow a hit through nine innings, but Miami did not score in the first eight innings, leaving the no-hitter in doubt. The Marlins offense finally busted through against Luke Putkonen in the bottom of the ninth. Putkonen threw a wild pitch to Greg Dobbs with the bases loaded, allowing Giancarlo Stanton to score the game-winning run.

The right-hander only allowed three baserunners in the game; Prince Fielder was hit by a pitch in the first inning, Jose Iglesias reached on an error in the fifth, and Andy Dirks drew a walk in the ninth. Alvarez was efficient with his pitches, only throwing 99 while striking out four batters.

Alvarez is the first Marlins pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Anibal Sanchez tossed one on Sept. 6, 2006 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is the first pitcher to toss a no-hitter at Marlins Park.

Strangest no-hitter I've ever seen. Alvarez was ready to pitch the 10th, and the game ended on a wild pitch with him in the on deck circle.

Never seen a team so flat heading into the playoffs...

Still...congrats to Alvarez!

Looks like the last game (retirement) for Juan Pierre as well. Good, hard-working ballplayer. If he had an arm, he could have been really something.

I’m sure that is a great omen (/sarc) as the Tigers limp into the playoffs . . .

An interleague series to end the season. That’s just a crime.

Verlander is the one who almost broke it with that long hit just foul.

Tigers will show up when they need to. Leyland says hes looking at the games after clinching like preseason games. They broke the MLB record number of strikeouts by pitchers yesterday.

Still congrats to Henderson Alvarez.

Tigers clinched the pennant. What do they have to prove?

There seems to be an inordinate number of no-hitters at the ends of baseball seasons.

There seems to be an inordinate number of no-hitters at the ends of baseball seasons.

There are. Indeed, the most popular single day for no-hitters is the last day of the season.

The most popular months are September, followed by April.

And, as you might suspect, there is a reason. April and September are the coolest months of the season. And air temperature (actually, air density) importantly affects the incidence of offense in baseball. The cooler (denser) the air, the less distance a batted ball will travel. And the more a breaking ball will move.

An amplifying factor with respect to the last day(s) of the season is that, often, one team is not only playing for nothing (and, thus, intent on getting it over with and going home), but they might also be playing a lineup full of scrubs.

In other words, the high incidence of no-hitters this time of year is a perfectly natural phenomenon.

i dont know why he was in the on deck circle.
it was impossible for him to bat in the 9th.
only their as a “base coach”, which a “pinch-hitter” could probably do better.

Not sure what you mean. He had only thrown 99 pitches and no one was in the bullpen. He was going to pitch the 10th inning. He couldn’t pitch the 10th inning if he was pinch hit for in the 9th obviously.

what i mean is it was impossible for him to bat in the 9th ... if the batter made the 3rd out, inning over ... if the batter reached game over. Bases were loaded, 2 outs, yes?

There also was no reason for the runner on first to run to second on the wild pitch.

Now I see where you were going. You’re correct. I was thinking it was 2nd and 3rd. They were loaded because Coghlan walked to load the bases.
