So refined sugar really is like drugs. Why sweeteners may INCREASE your sugar craving: They tickle the taste buds, but cant fool the brain into producing the pleasure response
Artificial sweeteners need to have a chemical that triggers dopamine release. Problem solved.
Yes, but increasing a craving doesn’t mean that I will succumb to that craving. IOW, just because I drink a diet coke does not equate to me eating a piece of cake.
I read a study recently that showed that the subjects who consumed the most aspartame (via diet soda) were significantly heavier than those who chose regular calorie-laden soda. I can’t find the study now, though.
Obviously, there are a lot of confounding variables that could be at work there, but it’s still interesting.
I have heard that if you eat a bacon cheeseburger and wash it down with diet soda, that they cancel each other out.
I suspect the problem is more glandular.
Intake of the sweets, including sugar substitutes, appear to change the metabolic rates and the tendency of the body to save any blood sugars present as fats.
There might be less calories consumed, but they become more efficiently processed by the body.
Let’s say your body replenishes fats at 5% your blood sugar level on a balanced diet, but with a sweetened diet with low blood sugar, it now shifts to a 60% storage process. Even when dieting and consuming 50% less calories, you would end up gaining weight.
“MAY increase ...”. Everything following MAY is imagination.
We need a site like snopes to catalogue all of these ‘studies’ and show details like who funded it, how many people actually were tested and the rest of the criteria. It would make it easy to call BS on all of the propaganda..
