2 weeks left, playoff races sizzle (Baseball Live Thread)

THE WILD SIDE: It's a scramble for the two AL wild-card spots, with a half-dozen teams trying to claim them. Texas, Cleveland and Tampa Bay are at the top, but wobbling.

Pinch-hitter Justin Morneau's single sent Pittsburgh over the Cubs 3-2 Sunday, leaving the Pirates even with St. Louis for the NL Central lead.

WHAT'S THE FORECAST?: Wicked weather always seems to wreak havoc at the end of the season. Cleveland waited out a rain delay of nearly 4 1/2 hours in Chicago before beating the White Sox 7-1 Sunday night. Just watch - somewhere, a storm will sweep into another stadium at the most inopportune time.

There was an article in my local paper (York Pa.) about a 107 year old lady that was a Phillies fan, when asked why she didn’t stick for the Orioles she said that she was sticking for the Phillies long before the Orioles were a team. The St Louis Browns became the Baltimore Orioles in 1954, now that’s a real long time Phillie Phanatic.

Lifetime multi generational Cards fan. Not getting the radio feed for tonights game for some reason. Will have to look for it on TV. I don’t understand the football against baseball folks, I love both sports, this is my favorite time of year

All I know is I’m going to miss Mariano Rivera horribly.
I’m almost hypnotized watching him pitch. What a wonderful
man and I wish him a long, healthy and happy retirement.

I like the heritage teams that have existed since the beginning.

I can’t help but imagine what it must have been like for my great grandfather growing up as an immigrant kid in Detroit and seeing guys like Ty Cobb play.

And there’s another Cabrera home run.

The Nats pretty much need them all at this point.

I don’t know what happened this year, never seen such good talent underperform so badly for so long. All offense problems. Davey Johnson’s hatred of manufacturing runs, no one cuts down their swing. It’s been much better lately.

Tigers better win it this year. The table is set for them. Hopefully Cabrera won’t break down in the post-season.

You bet he is!! But come on, what is the Nats record when they score three or more? It’s something completely ridiculous.

Nats...I don’t know what happened this year

They dumped Michael Morse and really had no clean-up all year. Werth and LaRoche are good but are not bombers, LaRoche had a career year in 2012 not to be repeated this year. Zim didn't get hot till lately, Espinosa was lacking this year, Suzuki is likable but not that good and until Ramos came back that was a hole.

But here is the big reason, they thought they won 2013 in 2012. With thinking like that baseball will humble you. Heads got too big. When they shutdown Strasburg early last year they pretty much said he'll do post season next year, nope that doesn't work, they should have skipped starts and used him in post season. 2012 may be the last time they will get there.

Good. Karma for that ass wipe Selig for watering down baseball with another WC spot.

BTW: the first game against the Braves today was awesome, that's the Nats I like, glad to see Kimbrel get the loss and the blown save. Being a Phillies and a Nats fan gets conflicting sometimes except both sides of me agree and hate the Braves.

Woo, looks like Nats won the second game too.

Nats just won both games of the double header against Atlanta. Denardo Spanicus hit in his 28th game in a row, the most since 2011 when Uggla made it to 33.

But the reds are skunking the Astros bad. The reds have six more games with the pirates, hopefully someone will take charge of that. Still a big, big longshot.

Kimbrel at least doesn’t have a fruity move like untucking his shirt. He just holds his arm out very awkwardly for some reason. I mean the untucking is not terrible it if it’s a one two three save allowing no runs, but how often does that happen for Soriano?

Rangers would have one World Series ring, perhaps two; if they had canned Washington when he tinkered with cocaine a while back. THird base coach, fine. Manager? Puh-lease.
