On my third birthday, I received a tricycle as a gift and would regularly ride it sometimes clear around the block unsupervised. Two years later, I walked to school unsupervised, as did everyone else.

But that was in a different galaxy--where California had a Republican governor and two Republican senators, the Southern states were mostly "blue," Iran and Cuba were our allies while Poland, Hungary and Romania belonged to an enemy alliance, and televisions, radios, steam irons and toasters were made in America.
