FULL TITLE: Parents left terrified after man hacked their baby monitor and yelled abuse at them and their 2-year-old daughter
A Houston, Texas couple was horrified when the baby monitor in their young childs room was taken over by a hacker who verbally attacked them and even used their daughters name.
Marc Gilbert says he was doing the dishes following his birthday celebration when he heard strange sounds coming from 2-year-old Allysons bedroom.
He discovered they were coming from the baby monitor as a strangers voice called his sleeping daughter an effing moron and little s*** before he quickly unplugged it.
The virtual intruder even knew Allyson by name because it was written just above her head, on the wall over where she dozed.
The hacker then yelled at Gilbert and his wife, using expletives in what they described as a British or European accent.
'He said, 'Wake up Allyson, you little (expletive),'" Gilbert said.
Allyson is deaf. Though she has a cochlear implant, it was turned off and she was never bothered by the shocking intrusion.
Then things became even creepier.

From the headline, I thought it was physically hacked as with a cleaver or machete.
Hacked it. You mean used a ham radio operator that came across the baby monitoefrequency and then started listening in, then decided to have a little fun.
Parents should know: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/home_blog/2012/01/baby-monitor-iphone-video.html
Years ago, we called this sort of thing a harmless prank. Today we freak out.
Almost certainly NOT a Ham.
More likely some teenage punk with another baby monitor.
Transceiver...

The “Prankster” called the child by name. A great counter joke would be to rip the “Prankster’s” balls off. Wouldn’t that would be one hell of a knee slapper!
Things have changed since I got my license.
Your refrigerator is running.
I raised 5 kids without a monitor.
I just don’t get the point of them.(The monitors,not the kids.) :-)
.
Yeah I know, I read the article. I was just commenting on how the heaadline caught my attention.
The camera was accessable remotely. A lot of people rig these things up so they can control them via their smart phones. Security companies advertise systems that allow you to monitor cameras, operate lights and even unlock your doors with your smart phone.
This doesn’t seem very “smart.”
Under no standard would such a thing ever qualify as a "harmless prank" today or yesterday.
If he had planted a camera rather than commandeering one (no moral difference) in yesteryear, he would have preferred the jail sentence to the beating he was asking for.
Very scary! I can’t even imagine. The dad said he felt so violated, as if the hacker actually broke into his house. I don’t blame him. I wonder if they’ll ever catch who did it and what are the penalties.
When I first heard about this, that’s what I thought.
But this is another level. It was a WiFi camera, which connects to a router and uses standard Internet protocols.
I expect that the camera or router wasn’t as secured as they thought. I can think of several ways this could happen, but I will keep them to myself.
I would do my best to find the guy and make sure even dental records would be useless in identifying what was left.

Agreed, my wife and I raised 5 kids too, with no Baby monitor. My opinion, for what it is worth: “If you are using a Baby monitor, you are not paying enough attention to your children”.
