"Cowboy" Jack Clement, a producer, engineer, songwriter and beloved figure who helped birth rock 'n' roll and push country music into modern times, died Thursday at his home. He was 82.
Dub Cornett, a close friend of Clement's, said his hospice nurse confirmed Clement passed away surrounded by family after declining treatment for liver cancer.
His death came just months after he learned he would be joining the Country Music Hall of Fame, a fitting tip of the hat to the man whose personal story is entwined with the roots of modern music like few others. He was to be inducted at a ceremony this fall.

According to accounts in Nick Tosches’ Hellfire biography of Jerry Lee Lewis (which I finally got around to reading early this year) and Good Rockin’ Tonight (among other sources, I’ve run across references several times) he was having a bout of stomach upset (possibly pondering reincarnation according to the lore). I knew the Clement family well. I lived in Whitehaven, Tennessee where Jack was from.
Good one. Foreword by Greil Marcus? Grrrr! This pseudo intellectual has gotten religion about Dylan’s Self-Portrait, which he dissed in RS mag when it first came out (”What is this shit?” was the big font title of the review, and for that (his change of opinion) he got the gig of writing the liner notes for the new Another Self Portrait of outtakes.
I bought Jack Clement’s album a few years ago, which contains a weird, happy version of the Stones’ “No Expectations”. And I probably have the Nick Tosches book somewhere, waiting to be read.
