Keep in mind that the Zero was a far superior fighter than anything that we had until about 1944. Depends on what you mean by superior. The P-38 was faster than the Zero and could outclimb the Me-262. Plus, the P-38 with it's guns all clustered in the nose had devastating firepower.

You are right. But when the P-40 was the first line fighter for our country the Zero was number one. The first airplane in the Pacific War that solved that problem was a P-38, in the hands of a good pilot, and we had a few of those.
