You are correct. There are at least 58 passages throughout the Bible which mention the cherubim. They are mysterious in their appearance (weird for sure), but their purpose is not - they symbolize the presence of God, the glory of God, the holiness of God.

Not exactly flying saucer material.

Read some of the ancietn Indian texts, there is some weird stuff in those, some read like jet fighter instruction manuals...
