Phil Mickelson wins Scottish Open

Phil Mickelson won the Scottish Open on Sunday with a final-round 3-under-par 69 plus a playoff hole with South African Branden Grace. Mickelson held off Grace by one at Inverness, Scotland after he birdied the first playoff hole and Grace parred it.

Lefty made it more difficult than it needed to be, though. When needing a par on the 72nd hole, he did his best Phil Mickelson impression and three-putted from 20 feet for bogey to put himself into the playoff with Grace, who had already finished.

Mickelson then nearly holed out his third shot (a wedge) on the 607-yard, par-5 playoff hole. He tapped in for an easy birdie, and Grace missed his long birdie. Here's a look at the chip:

Yay! Mickleson is my fav golfer.

Well, this may be a girlie thing to say, but he’s got such a cute look in his eyes, like a teddy bear or something. He seems so nice. Good family man.

Glad for him.

Btw, was Tommy 2gloves in this one?

How can you hole-out on your third shot and still have a putt for a birdie?

Phil is my favorite player as well, he's a good guy and a class act.

Didn't see the tournament, just kept checking the scoreboard during the four days. Was tickled to see him win it after being tied for 2nd with three others yesterday.

Don't know if Gainey played but didn't notice him on the scoreboard.

He nearly hole his third shot on a par 5...the tap-in was for a 4, a birdie.

Gainey didn’t play in the Scottish Open; most of the players seemed European. Gainey may have played in the John Deere Classic, which was the PGA tourney of the week. Mickelson played the Scottish Open because he’s a fan of it, in addition to prepping for the British Open next week.

The most exciting golfer of recent year or two to me is Brandt Snedeker.

Good choice IMO. Watched part of his match at Pebble Beach. Looks like he’s played well thus far this year. Hard to stay in the top tier.

Would love to see Phil win the British this week. But his record in this tourney doesn’t ‘fill’ me with confidence! I’m still smarting over last month’s debacle at Merion. Two doubles in the final round! If he had saved bogey on those two holes he would have been in a playoff...

Lets hope it carries over to Muirfield next week. Should be interesting to see Faldo and Tom Watson in the field. Tough golf course.

Muirfield has a history of great past champions - Nicklaus, Trevino, Watson to name a few. Let's hope we get another such winner this week.

I am wondering if that is his first ever victory over there in Ireland/Scotland/England.

It was Mickelson's first win in Europe in 20 years.

Sure Snedeker can play. But.... can't he get a haircut??!!

Phil seems to struggle with the three and four foot puts. Statistically it may not be correct, but from just watching him over the years he seems better from the ten to twelve foot range. I am glad he won because he is a first class person.

Every golfer, pro & amateur should copy putting style & stroke of Inbee Park. I use the same putter she uses, the Odyssey Sabertooth white ice. I have tried every brand and model and that putter holds line better on short putts than anything else. If Paula Creamer had switched to that putter, she would have won much more. SHe also struggles with 3-4 footers.

Just finished watching (dvr'd it), great win for Phil!

Can someone explain to me why they play the Open on a course with so much dead grass?

The Open is played on nine different links courses in England/Scotland. Thus you’ll find lots of grass like that on them as it’s part of the landscape. Go look up some photos of the courses.
