Thank you for posting. As someone who has had very debilitating thoughts very recently and throughout my life since adolescence and really struggled with wanting to go on with this life, I appreciate your courage to share your thoughts on this matter. It's an important thing to talk about as many people get to this point in their life at one time or the other and sometimes throughout their life. During this last go around in the last several months, I described it as an evil head...like that Mike's Hard Lemonade commercial...and truly felt like demons were in my mind. I even started telling myself it was God telling me/wanting me to do it. To The Jogger: FHU mentioned. :)

Depression is a direct result of human consciousness feeling as though it is in a freefall. Prayer is the process of tuning consciousness to higher levels, which will break the freefall pattern.

Another excellent technique I often utilize is to have a person in depression is to think of someone or something beginning with the letter “A” that they can feel gratitude for. Then work through the entire alphabet. By the time you get to “Z” you will be lifted up.

When I read your caption about demons creating depression, I thought you were going a different route that is also possible. This is much more difficult to remedy.

Depression results in life when a person is growing spiritually. It doesn’t feel that way when you are in it, but the end result can often be excellent as a person moves ahead in their life.

There are two main identities an individual experiences during life, “Dependency Identity and Self Identity.” When either identity is diminishing, a person will often experience depression if they do not formulate a focus on a pathway that moves them ahead. The path of focus for an individual leaving dependency is seeking validation of a healthy sense of self that will set them free. Teenage depression is created as consciousness moving forward without a focal point is much like a ballerina doing pirouettes across a dance floor without a focal point. They get dizzy and fall over. Or grab hold of someone to hold them from falling.

The same depression takes place as a person is losing their self identity. It can be the loss of a spouse, child, parent, job, or whatever a person utilizes to define who they are. It is a terrible freefall feeling. Many people will seek to redefine self in order to feel good about who they are and get rid of the depression, but this is usually temporary. This “mid life crisis” freefall leads one to the “dark night of the soul” experience.

If a person goes through the dark night of the soul experience and comes out the other side, they can transcend self and experience God’s Love first hand. This results in an inner peace and a freedom from the downward spiral.

Just as focusing on self identity gets a person out of dependency depression, focusing on God through prayer gets one out of a loss of self identity depression.

This process is not just theory, it is real and experiential. For the same reason that you cannot put new wine in an old wineskin, nor patch an old garment with new cloth, we must get rid of the old prior to bringing in the new. This very painful process of emptying self is what creates the feeling of depression. When we are full of our-self or full of others in dependency, we have no room for God.

By the way, we as a society are about to go through a great diminishing of self or mid-life crisis. While it will be very painful, it will help us turn to God for our strength.

I highly recommend the book “What Was I Thinking”, by Caspar McCloud. It is all about how your thought life effects your health and spiritual well being.

The problem with psychiatry today is that they think everything is biochemical and usually offer prescriptions to help people block the interface between their physical body and their soul. Heal the soul and the biochemistry of the body heals itself.

For example, fasting as a spiritual practice decreases the production of 5-HTP and serotonin in the enterochromaffin cells (a neuroendocrine cell)in the lining of the stomach and upper GI. The decrease in serotonin in the synaptic cleft (which acts as a shock absorber relating to transmission of emotional thoughts)allows the unresolved wounds in the soul to surface and be dealt with for soul cleansing purposes.

Much emotional eating is caused by the body craving carbs which will increase the serotonin production in the enterochromaffin cells..

I wish that other people could experience their soul and other people’s souls as the physical tangible object that they are, not just as a theoretical object. It opens a whole new door of awareness and explains why religion teaches what it does.

The human soul is not located within the body. The body exists within and is a manifestation of the human soul. Depression is what we experience as we are breaking through the egg shell of our self identity and being born of the spirit at which time we begin to perceive from our soul or spirit, not just our physical body senses. To the extent that we diminish “My individual will” and focus on living our life to serve “Thy Will” the process becomes less painful.

Fabian,

Excellent commentary. Thank you for sharing.

One little reminder. Remember what Jesus said in John 12:47
“If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. “

Often our ego is used by Satan to judge others and it causes us to play God. Remember, an ego identity that assumes the role of God will also create separation from our ability to experience God’s Love. We try to make our will God’s will instead of making God’s Will our will.

During the Civil War there was a national day of prayer. Several Methodist ministers met with Abraham Lincoln and stated “We will pray that God is on our side.” To which Lincoln responded, “That is not my concern! But that we are on God’s side is my concern.”

Understanding this helps us to learn the lesson of always dealing with our enemies with Love. If we play the judge and jury, be are playing God and blocking His Love.

This is exactly why I recommended this book. In my pre-coffee state this morning my explanation was too brief.
Please look up Pastor Caspar McCloud on YouTube or Google. This is not a psychology book. When I saw this short video this was the first thing I thought of because so few are speaking in these terms. Also check out Caspar’s website at www.theupperroomfellowship.org

Yes, that is the real ultimate reason we have depression and evil thoughts that we tend to act on...I have been saved from that acting now, thank God. It is indeed the dark thoughts of playing judge. And those little tiny irritations will and often do build up into a repressed rage which when internalized by nicer people like I was, becomes a deep depression. So the simple remedy is in the Be Still exercise at copingstrategiescd.com. So simply effective that the military is using now!

yes...my mid-life crisis lasted like 7 years and I almost offed myself at one point. Having a very willful and not so saved minister rubbing my face in my crisis in front of the congregation made my situation much worse...but that is another story.
I do see that the soul in indeed traveling in the body though. The body with it’s pain ability and brain, tests us to see if we will grow patience and move towards the light or God, or move towards judgement and irritability and satan. This is a boat camp for heaven, but as Jesus said, most really prefer a selfish hell in the end. It ultimately is up to us, and that sets us apart from all the rest of God’s creation...we have a choice.

There is no doubt that demons are active in human affairs.
I am reading an interesting book by Fathe Gabriel Amorth who was the chief exorcist for Rome. It is available on Amazon :

Thanks. I will check it out. This world is a battlefield and boot camp for souls. The only reason anyone could not see that is because of the veils of darkness that those demons hold over peoples minds through their unforgiving judgments.

You are using the term "depression" but in actuality are speaking only of mild, everyday mood disorders among functioning individuals, not clinical depression.

I have seen clinically depressed patients for whom the word "gratitude" would no longer have meaning, as they are so deeply despairing. For these patients only the hope of being put out of their misery somehow would evoke a feeling of hope or gratitude. They might offer the letters D - Death or S - Suicide. Patients with this degree of disabling depression would not be at all uncommon in a clinical setting.

Word games aren't going to do the trick with this population, believe me.

I work with all levels. From those who have attempted suicide several times, people who are dying of terminal illness to those who are experiencing mild depression or cyclical depression and manic episodes. It doesn’t matter. There are many tools in the tool box, each depending upon the specific circumstances of the individual.

While I do not promote the antidepressants or the atypical antidepressants, I do see their need as they save lives. Like painkillers, I would hope individuals can decrease their intake by solving the root problem rather than taking them for the remainder of their lives. Unlike many, I do not see a biochemical imbalance as permanent and seek to find the root cause of the imbalance. Experience has shown that their is virtually always a consciousness driven stored experience that created the perception programming that is generating the biochemical imbalance.
