there is an island called lesbos, it is real and there to this day.
It was legendary as a waypoint for sailors/merchants/navy for their supply and r&r prostitution. The prostitutes were reputed to perfect their skills amongst each other between customers.
IOW a lesbian was a prostitute who was properly trained to please their male custormer.
