Many consider the 1939 Yankees one of baseball's greatest teams.

One of, but not the best.

Nice. Too bad the old stadium is gone now.

Note the large ad in centerfield touting "single edge" razor blades - 5 for 25 cents.

If you told any of those folks that their grandkids would be shaving with five-edge razors and that they would be paying $30 for a package of 14 of them, why I think they would hang themselves on the spot.

Wonderful..takes me back..many great childhood memories. As a kid growing up in the Bronx in the 50's..living a few miles for the Stadium..a short ride on the subway..during the summer we'd go to lots of games. A weekday day game ( and back then most were day games) would have far less than 10,000 people. If you doubt me, when Maris hit his 61st, there were only 20,000 or so in the stands..you could get in for 50 cents with your G.O. card..you'd sit in the bleachers. We soon learned that after the 7th inning, the ushers stopped chasing us when we went to move down to the better seats.

The best part of the old Yankee Stadium was that the right-field porch.. 296 feet..came right down to field level..indeed the barrier, was about 3 feet high and was chicken wire..you can make it out closely if you look at the movie.

One time, late in a game, about 10 of us had snuck down there..it was magical, and during a late pitching change for the Yankees, the right fielder, Hank Bauer, walked over to us, said hello, and picked up my friend's hot dog and coke and ate it..then went back to his position..

Just awesome. Thanks so much for sharing. Passing link on to several old timer friends of mine who played semi-pro ball. Loved seeing the guys in their Sunday best.

My how times have changed.
