Pit Bulls' Fatal Attack Leads to Dangerous Dog Crackdown in L.A.
LA Weekly ^ | Fri., Jun. 28 2013 | Dennis Romero

Posted on 06/30/2013 2:28:14 AM PDT by nickcarraway

Last month a woman jogging east of Palmdale was fatally mauled by a pack of pit bulls. The shocking attack landed the dogs' owner in jail, where he faces a rare murder charge for something four of his canines allegedly did.

Now Los Angeles County authorities are cracking down on "dangerous dogs" with one of the best weapons around: Money.

The office of county Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky this week announced that $3.5 million in new spending has been approved specifically for new animal control officers, vicious dog investigations and prosecutions, and a call center in Lancaster that could get help for dangerous dog complaints quicker.

County government is also considering expanding the legal definition of a potentially dangerous dog to include a history of attacks on livestock as well as attacks on people, says Yaroslavsky's office.

The fresh cash, meanwhile, will help fund a 9-person unit that will be focused solely on designating problem dogs, like the ones owned by the suspect in the jogger's death, as "potentially dangerous."

That would give the pooches a strike on their records that would help authorities take them away from irresponsible owners.

Authorities say Alex Donald Jackson's dogs were used to protect a marijuana grow house and had attacked before.

The county says the extra cash and enforcement could prevent future tragedies like story of jogger Pamela Marie Devitt, 63.

If we'd had more Major Case Unit officers, the guy in Littlerock might have come up on our radar sooner and we might have been able to bring a case against him sooner.

The crackdown needs to hit the blacks and white trash owners who mistreat and train these otherwise great dogs to go rogue. Hey, LA, it's STUPID PEOPLE!!!!

The only weapon liberals do have is money.

And their success is measured by the expenditure of money, not the end results.

That's so they can always justify even larger expenditures in the future.

PIT BULLS; What a wonderful, tender, loving breed of demon. Just ask the attack victims how gentle they are!

Now if they would only start going after the ones who raise potentially dangerous children?

There are also owners who let their dogs run loose. If you have a dog — any breed of dog — it should be secured on your property. And parents should properly supervise their children and teach them not to approach and try to pet every dog.

If LA wants to spend taxpayer money, the city should crack down on irresponsible owners AND parents.

"Now if they would only start going after the ones who raise potentially dangerous children?"

Amen

Might even stop the bastards that raise killer dogs.

The solution to an attacking dog is a 357 immediately adjudicated by judge, trial and sentence.

pop, pop and the owner down and cuffed .

Quite a few of those guys should stumble and fall down the stairs at the police station.

(Little known knarf fact; ... I "fell down the stairs" accidently" way back in '69 which surprisingly cured my taste for hangin' with the bad boys.)

Good reason for concealed carry.

Pit Bulls should be bred out of existence along with their irresponsible owners.

Does this mean they will charge Mark Kelly (Gabrielle Giffords) husband for letting their pit bull loose to kill a baby seal.

hahahaha I make up a big funny sometimes, thinking laws should apply to the privileged.

IF it is just the people, why is it always pit bulls? The breed was bred to attack. There are stupid people who own pugs and we don’t hear about them attacking people.

laws should apply to the privileged.

At least you realize that it is silly to expect the laws to apply to the ruling class.

The pit bull breed should be made extinct.

I DO conceal carry——but, I take my 2 labradoodles to the local doggie park nearly every day.

For the past couple of weeks, a woman has shown up with 3 pit bulls. You can bet that I am keeping a close eye on my dogs while she is there.

It turned out that those pit bulls were the sweetest dogs you can imagine—at least they have been so far.

However, I won’t let myself be lulled into taking my eye off of them. I know that there are some nice, well bred, well trained pit bulls around—but I think that since a lot of them were bred to fight that there’s always the chance that something awful could happen.

I expect more sense from you.

Look at post #4 and say that.

When more cents are squeezed out pit bull owners there will be fewer of them around.

You never find them in the suburbs where responsible people live -- only in the ghettos of irresponsibility.

I assumed by your posts on other topics that you were driven by logic not histrionics.

Attacks by all dogs are awful and unacceptable,
but to determine public policy based on appeals to emotion
and to condemn all dogs of a certain type based
on the actions of what in reality is a very tiny percentage,
is a reaction of a liberal and not a conservative’s response.

If that is acceptable reasoning then to be consistent
we surely must apply it to guns and alcohol as well
for they cause far more carnage than irresponsible dog owners.

“You never find them in the suburbs where responsible people live — only in the ghettos of irresponsibility.”

Nonsense, without foundation in reality, seasoned with a dash of racism.

It appears from this story that some realistic and effective measures are being instituted...

The pit bulls ripped her scalp off and tore her arm from her body — over 100 puncture wounds and she bled to death — and you want to accuse me of “histrionics”???
