This is, oddly, very similar in spirit to the old "code of honor" among European aristocracy and 19th century American wannabee aristocrats. Failure to resent an insult and respond, if necessary, violently, would result in exclusion from polite society as a man who had lost his honor.

But the old guys went about "defending their honor" in a much more civilied fashion.
