Just keep the lil girl away from Barbeque sauce when she’s around the dog...

We had a 90# red dobie when our daughter was born. Several family members were uncomfortable about Obi being around our baby. He became totally devoted to her and followed her everywhere as she grew up. I used to play “monster” with her where I would act like Frankenstein and chase her around. She loved it but the dog didn’t. He positioned himself between us one time, folded his ears back, gave me a “smile” and let me know that he didn’t like this game. I got the message. He was a great dog.

The unmentioned thing is that Dobies bond very strongly with a single person, and can be very protective around young children. So it is important for a family that owns one to very carefully watch the Dobie when strangers, probably relatives, approach the child for the first time. Most Dobies are generally laid back about it, but some need reassurance that all is well or they may not approve.

The most common thing, of course, is that “If there is going to be any play-play, I am going to be in the middle of it!”
