They lived in a lower income neighborhood with a lot of immigrants in Cambridge. That said the houses aren't cheap even there. For whatever it is worth some local interviewed on TV who claimed they were customers at his auto repair shop said they ran with New York plates (not an exact quote) which may be his way of suggesting they had ties to others from NYC, or were just the typical shady guys who have fake plates, etc.

Traditionally the neighborhood that they are from is the kind of place where a lot of business is done in cash. It is only a few hundred feet from the center of the used auto parts, scrap metal, etc. industry is in Cambridge. Historically it is the kind of place where people only have first names, if they even offer that much information.
