It’s hard to trust the additional claims in this story, given how off base they were on these simple and readily debunked ones.
True, but the LEOs seemed to take extraordinary care to capture the second terrorist alive. Had he been some right wing American they would have killed him in short order once they had him surrounded in a plastic boat exchanging fire with them. Does anybody really think that the SWAT and long rifle teams present couldn't have hit him from their positions less than fifty feet away? The terrorist had no cover in the boat.
Also, we heard the aunt on TV saying she had spoken to the FBI, and the FBI monitored and communicated with her son. Also, the father's statements were very interesting - suggesting that his son tell everything, and that if he was killed "all hell would break loose." Maybe that threat was more about politics and information disclosure than a threat of violence by other Chechen terrorists.
And pretty clearly the FBI knew the identity of the terrorists before they released the video tapes to the public. I can't imagine that they didn't run the images past their own counter terrorism guys, one or more of whom had interviewed terrorist #1, and no doubt had his picture in their files.
Obviously all speculation, but there have been other cases where intelligence assets go bad. Like that guy who used to work for the CIA that we had to bury at sea.

Except that claim is completely untrue in the case of these guys.

Of note, the Chechens are/were part of the Caucasion background population making up the so-called Circassians who were brought in as children to man the Ottoman spatznez in the late middle ages. In the whole terrorist vs. counter-intelligence bit there is a long history of players who were of unsure ultimate loyalties, perhaps often even to themselves.
For 50 years or so the Russian radicals and the tsarist intelligence agencies played this game. One of the ways some of the radicals financed their activities was to also become, or appear to become a double agent for the cops. Stalin was rumored to have been one that did so.
Of course, in such a case it can get really difficult to figure out which side a person is REALLY on, assuming the term has any meaning at all.
Listening to the police radio feed during the capture last night the LEOS were standing down to the FBI orders all night!They were always asking for permission to do this and that but had to be cleared by the FBI first.

Same thing happened the night of the big chase. Always the same thing. Police would get them cornered, would be told to back out,Feds would come in, media backed out and then the ‘gatlin guns’ deployed. I have no problem mowing these clowns down but what bothered me listening to it was the obvious attempt by Feds to have no local law enforcement, media witness to events.
I have one problem with this theory - well at least one. If this were true it would have been a very simple matter to make sure that the younger one was not taken alive. I was betting that he would be killed last night yet he wasn’t.
Those boys had some SERIOUS money...so this does make some sense.

Simple, the FBI needs to determine the extent of the double cross.
