What’s to blame. How about liberal land use planning that forces developers to build on small lots within cities so there is not room to play baseball because the land is too valuable for sports fields.

You can put about 20 basketball courts in the space it takes for just one baseball field if you include the foul territory area. Maintenance cost for an outdoor basketball court is next to nothing while a baseball field can be very expensive to maintain.

This is such a sad thought. (Baseball is the only sport I really enjoy a lot)

To Rembrandt, I was thinking that Selig is getting senile when DH told me about this at dinner. Many of the Astros best players were Black. (I don’t know about now, but mid 80s-90s) lol I couldn’t remember Gerald Young’s name to save my soul, though.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane & thank goodness for rosters on line!

That's one thing, but there are other factors that play in as well.

A surprisingly large number of black children are from Urban ghetto areas and 70% are the children of single, unwed mothers who have histories of several generations of cumulative drug and alcohol abuse.

Many of these kids have serious fetal alcohol or drug syndrome problems with brain and nervous system damage and impairment which reduces the fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination needed to be a serious baseball player, as well as general cognitive functions. The various levels of motor impairment, hyperactivity, attention deficit, impulse control and anger management problems of people with fetal substance abuse issues makes it even harder to excel at baseball

While you don't have to be a genius to play baseball, intelligence and fast thinking are definite edge in baseball.

The same decline is true in the music industry. How many Stevie Wonders, Jimmy Hendricks, Diana Ross Grover Washington's or Aretha Franklins do you see these days.

Music used to be the place where true artistry and musical talent trumped race and was a traditional area where gifted African Americans could excel despite race and some truly amazing talents have chosen this route.

How many serially talented black musicians are on the scene?

Not as many as there used to be.

Most are doing rap and the only tting they know how to play is a boom box.

A lot of it has to do with the cumulative effects of 5 generations of welfare dependence and drug and alcohol abuse in the African American community.

The chaotic gangster lifestyle does mesh well with baseball either, while it meshes much better with basketball.
