you are now the one with the accent

Tell me about it. I can't disguise my SoCal accent to save my life. These Texans have me figured out as soon as I open my mouth. And believe it or not, half the Texans I meet don't even sound like Texans!

Just a couple of tips when you move down here.......

1) We pull off to the side of the road (and remove hats) for funeral processions. You pull back on the road if you see the last car with headlights on or the last police car following.

2) If we know the deceased or their family members....we take food to the home. A lot of times it’s ‘home cooked’ (like a casserole they can freeze and use later) but, recently, store-bought things are OK. Barbeque that you pick up at a restaurant is always a winner.......but, be advised. EVERYBODY does that....’cause it’s easy.

Then there’s that whole “bless your heart” thing. Don’t be intimidated by that. It means many things, usually: “Well, bless his heart!” (This guy is a complete and utter idiot.) -OR- “Well, bless his heart! (Which means we have compassion for someone’s given situation and we truly care.) “Well, bless your heart!” (Which means you are grateful to that person who was very generous to you.) And, LAST, but NOT LEAST.....”Bless your heart”....(said through gritted teeth and an intimidating stare to, basically, say....”F U.”)

Clear as mud? ;-)

You’ll pick up on the nuances the longer you live here. :)

Good luck, God bless, and please remember that you came to South to join it, not to change it.

I had a hotel suite at the Sofitel on 57th & 7th for four years back in the 80s-90s and that's as close as I've ever come to "living in NY" and that was close enuff.

I'd spend 2-3 weeks in NY and then 2-3 weeks on the road and then back home for 2 weeks.

It was a long four years, but I pitied the native NY City dwellers, they had no respite.

Congrats on your escape from NY.

>>Welcome to our home. You are cordially invited to our next get together. When is that by the way?

When Trapped_in becomes Escaped_from_NY?

When are you here? I’m working up that way at least for April, FWIW. I’m pretty good on foodie, non-chain-y restaurant recommendations too.

Its quicker now than when I’ve got them before. Now they have a picture on them like a real ID. I guess the increased costs goes to all the technology used to expedite the process. Or just give the court some cash.

Either way, if you’re legit, its a painless process.

My dad had one in NY. It was easier to fill out the paperwork for my security clearance than the app he had to complete. Glad I made the move 17 years ago.

Congrats! You will probably be much happier. Good decision!

Just one thought: If, after a couple of years of living there, feel that you are now “one of the gang” and can therefore get away with making fun of Southernisms (even truly silly ones), think again. Especially with a NY accent (even a mild one), you will not be assimilated until you’ve lived there 20 years. You may make many friends who truly come to love you and value you ... but if you ever drop a criticism of the Southern life in a Yankee dialect, you can get “froze out” real quick! Just sayin’.

"control freaks like Bloomberg"

A freak who is really a Democrat, walks like a Democrat, talks like a Democrat and cra*!s all over people like a Democrat, but says he is a Republican. And NY was dumb enough to accept that.

Finally, after years of dreaming, we've finally moving from New Yorkistan to America (the outskirts of Atlanta, to be exactly)!

You will love America. You will love Atlanta. I left New York, and Atlanta is now my home. We can now meet for some of the finest Thai food you will ever experience!

Most Yankees here go through what a radio commentator called the “Cycle”:

1. believe the propaganda (generated mostly by the real estate industry) that NC is heaven;
2. Move to NC and get a temp job or work retail;
3. learn that one cannot support a household on low wages;
4. run through life savings;
5. lose house and family;
6. move away;
7. the real estate industry profits for a second time;

You see these people in the Cycle around all the time, by the hundreds, working retail with their furrowed little brows, wondering what happened. It’s sad.

I envy you I am stuck up here in the UP of Michigan, where on Friday and Saturday several inches of snow is predicted.

Ja, snow and cold keeps the riff raff out, eh? Do they consider Mississippi trolls and flatlanders up there, or is that reserved for us? :)

Not a yooper, but from North Michigan before 'temporarily' moving to outside the People's Republic of Ann Arbor.

I’ll be working 20 miles NE of Atlanta,

I know that area a little bit. My ex-girlfriend's from Gwinnett County. That area is alright, but a little too big city/suburbia for my tastes. Some areas are sketchy like Norcross but I wouldn't put it in the category of South Atlanta.

The mountains north of there are great and be sure to visit them. It reminds me of my old home in North Michigan with different accents. That's a high compliment from me.

Ok. Now I see what you mean. This guy is not in that class. He/his wife spent their vacations years earlier visiting spots that thought that they would like to retire to and they settled on Cary. So no one sold them on Cary- they went there with their eyes open. They were very highly paid individuals so their nest egg is not empty. Their house alone in NY, when sold, brought enough for the new Cary digs plus, plus, plus. I believe they now live in a gated community in Cary, IIRC.

All I remember is how he raved about it and he had already been there for a couple of years at that time. That’s why your post interested me when you said Cary. I have never been there but he sure created a desire to do so with his spiel! I told him he should get a part time job in the Tourism Dept of Cary.
