3 times I have experienced the fear of being in the presence of a rogue cop - and incredibly relieved to walk away without being harmed.
I know many of them are good people, but I have developed a large amount of distrust.
Going to work one day (when I had a job), just rolling down the expressway with all the other traffic...
When all of a sudden everyone starts slamming on their brakes.
Some idiot motorcycle-cops doing radar on THE EXPRESSWAY. So naturally everyone slams on their brakes.
I had to stop in the median. Got a few tickets.
Talk about rogue cop, both arms full of tats. Complete 100% certified-guaranteed asshole. Most revenue collectors are, seems to me.
It is also very hard to get rid of a truly bad cop who is in tight with the union.
I had one such pointed out to me by the brother of an officer on his force. The other cops knew he was rotten, doing drugs, unpredictably violent, and that nobody, even other cops, should ever be alone with him. They also knew that the union would not permit him to be disciplined at all.
The union even had his death reclassified as “In the line of duty”, though he was off duty, DUI and carrying narcotics, and had illegal weapons in his car when he crashed it into a building and died. Why? Because he had no relatives, and his insurance had the union as his beneficiary. Lots of money they wouldn’t get if that other stuff was official.
I often hear “It’s just a few rotten apples, most of the police are OK” which reminds me of the officer that gave another officer a speeding ticket who was not only ostracized by every other cop in her department, she felt heat from the police from surrounding jurisdictions. She sued, and won (South Florida area).
