I bet I've read 1/2 dozen articles on FR in the past year or so about this very topic - some sort of wierd human-chicken interaction. These people ain't right in the head.
Having worked on a chicken farm as a teenager, I can attest to the fact that the birds have little to offer, besides being tasty when battered and deep-fried.
Back when I was a kid we lived in the country. There was one year when Dad had about twenty or thirty chickens, and one day he slaughtered them all at one clip. One got away from him after he cut its head off; I still remember watching it run around the yard and my mom screaming her head off.
I was probably about nine when this happened, and it was years before I would eat chicken again.
