Need FReepers advice about move to Greenfield,Indiana

Posted on 12/26/2012 9:34:52 AM PST by TNoldman

My wife and I are thinking about moving from Knoxville,Tn to Greenfield,Indiana(20 miles east of Indianapolis). The main reason for the move is to be near family members who live in Greenfield and nearby Michigan. Most of the family is in or near Greenfield. We are 78 and 75 years old white married couple in good health and are physically active - Travel, Camping, Golf etc.

The questions we have are relative to the stability of the local economy, the crime statistics, availability of homes in good neighborhoods. We would like a 1500 sq ft - one level home - with an acre or so of land so we can have our Travel Trailer and tow vehicle under cover on our property as well as a two car garage attached to the house. We need a fenced yard for our two Golden Retrievers and an occasion visit of Grandchildren.

We understand the difference in climate and we have been spoiled the last 22 years living in Knoxville,Tn. We usually spend 2-3 months in Florida in January -February-March time period anyway. Being away from multiple Children and Grandchildren is prompting this consideration for moving. Being closer to Family will be helpful when we really get old.

A former co-worker of mine had to move away from Greenfield without leaving a forwarding address. Her husband was a cop there, and when he wouldn’t go along with some dirty illegal business they were doing they started a harrassment campaign against him and his family, including death threats. I would stay away if I were you.

You can find excellent insight, comments and relocation suggestions from locals anywhere by going to The City Data Forums.

Pick rural Kentucky near I-75.

I understand from reading ‘A View from the Porch’ that Tamara Keel thinks that Broad Ripple IN is rather a nice town. They have the problems with the IMPD (either Indianapolis Metro Police or ‘I must patrol drunk’...) but aside from that, the food scene is satisfying.

Zillow.com has a good selection of house values for research.

Don’t know much about Greenfield. Live in Indy myself.
I wouldn’t move today, or tomorrow. Got 8” of snow blowing around.

Here’s a link to an interactive map that will give you detailed info on the different neighborhoods.

Here’s another good link to get some more detailed info on the town.

Greenfield, from what I hear, is not a bad little town. Maybe someone that lives there will contact you with some detailed info.
Good luck!

TN, we moved from Michigan to north Indy area in 02 and love it. Our Daughter was tranferred so we sold everything and moved down. We are in the same age group (old Geezers) We love it in Indy area lot to do crime is very low but then it can happen anywhere. I don’t know if you are a believer in 2A but Indiana has lifetime permit to carry a Handgun. We have a friend in our corvette club that lives in Greenfield let me know if you want something specific that’s a concern, good luck.

Broad Ripple is nice but lots of libs from the university. Rural IN is pretty nice, many Patriots.

Oberon, be serious.
That was a unique set of circumstances in which the vast majority of citizens would never find themselves.

Greenfield, Indiana, is a wonderful community (no, I don’t live there).
You’ll find typical Hoosier Hospitality, with nice neighbors and friendly faces.
It’s handy to Indianapolis, and the area near the intersection of I-70 and State Road 9 is booming with shopping and eateries.

Oberon, be serious.

I am serious.

The take-away from my previous post isn't "this could happen to you." Rather, the lesson is "the cops are dirty in Greenfield."

I know they're dirty in lots of places, but as a matter of policy I won't willingly move to a jurisdiction where I know they're dirty for a fact.

I have family there and it’s a nice town. In fact I have family all over east-central Indiana. Typical Hoosier folk. Midwestern hospitality.

We moved our business and entire extended family from Brighton Michigan down to Martinsville Indiana, about 25 miles S. of Indianapolis, and never regretted it once. Greenfield is like most small Indiana towns, some petty problems like most other places but plenty of nice neighborhoods to choose from. Local real estate market is awash with homes that fit you need, and as far as the economy Indiana is doing just fine, especially for retired folks with fixed incomes. Property taxes are not bad compared to most surrounding states, plenty of local places for shopping and entertainment but it might be a little far to drive from there if you do it often. All in all if you like small town rural type living you could do far, far worse.

I grew up in Broad Ripple, it used to be a nice village. has restaurants and local pubs. Walked all over the place as a teen because I went to High School there.

Sorry to say it, but folks are moving out of there now. The thugs have taken over and some of the business people are pulling up stakes.

People are getting mugged all the time on the Monon Trail.

Kind of sad.

Indiana now is a RTW state and has veto proof R majorities in both branches of the legislature. The incoming governor Mike Pence is also an excellent guy.

We’re probably one of the very best positioned northern states, but realize everyone will suffer as the Baraqqi Regime enforces its progressive agenda in the coming years.

Greenfield used to be home to Elanco, the animal products' subsidiary o Eli Lilly and Company. Elanco offices have located more east, though still in vicinity, and there's presumably still some tax base and influence there. I know a few people that live in the Greenfield and New Palestine areas, and commute to work in Indianapolis.

Greenfield is also home to Royal Hylands G C, an 18-hole mostly links-styled layout, with reasonably affordable green fees and a friendly staff.

When we were researching our relocation TO Knoxville (Oak Ridge), we found good info on www.city-data.com and it’s by “real people” as opposed to advertisers, Chambers of Commerce, etc.
