There are some people, e.g. many American Indians, who have a very reduced capability to metabolize alcohol. Then there are several Sa'ami tribes in Scandinavia who have many members with NO capability to metabolize alcohol.

That creates a serious social problem ~

I suppose there are other causes of alcoholism ~ perhaps various sorts of liver damage.

The only part of it under the control of the victim is to make sure alcohol consumption is within the ability of the body to metabolize it in a relatively short time.

I cringe at the use of that word (victim) in this context. As if someone did something to someone, and someone else owes sympathy and restitution. The victim isn’t the alcoholic... it’s their family members and others who suffer from the effects of the alcoholics poor decisions. The alcoholic is the victimizer of their own family and friends. Once he can look at it in that context he is free to own and fix the problem.
