The town itself is pronounced "Hurri-cun".

I drive through there on my way up to Columbus, OH once or twice a year.
Usually drive as fast as I can between Charleston and US 35 exit.
There’s the sister chemical plant to the one in Bhopal, India along that stretch. The plant that spilled some chemical and killed hundreds,
Hurricane, St. Albans, Nitro, don’t know the exact location.
Keep the windows up and the AC on recirculate. (not that it would help in a real chem cloud.)
Spooks me.

Oddly enough, I have never heard a nickname applied to Hurricane. However this town is just down the road from Poca, WV whose high school sports teams are nicknamed the Dots.

Actually Hurricane is not too far from Tornado, WV.
