What people seem to miss is that these "minimum wage jobs" were always supposed to be nothing more than entry level jobs for young workers, helping to prepare young workers for higher paying jobs once they learn responsibility. They're low wage because they require low (or no) skill levels. They're supposed to be the first step in a long line of jobs, each of which are supposed to teach new skills, and as the skill lever increases, so does the pay.

One of the biggest problems now is that with the influx of illegal aliens, they're often taking those jobs, and quite frankly, most of those illegal aliens are far more attractive to employers. Even though they might not speak english, they often have incredible work ethics, and are willing to do any work for what ever pay is available.

But back to the topic at hand, minimum wage jobs were never to be used to support a family. And I've heard that one of the reasons that unions are behind increasing minimum wage is because union wages are sometimes indexed to the minimum wage. So that any time the minimum wage is increased, the union wages go up, without having to renegotiate their contracts.

Single income retail workers used to be able to support their family. What has changed?

There wasn't as much "stuff" to buy back then. Basically food, clothes and shelter, and food you made from scratch, so it cost much less to feed a family than it does now.

Hubby and I play in Euchre tournament and the two people of that group work for Walmart. The gal told me tonite she makes 22.00/hr and the guy makes around the same...plus they get Holiday pay tomorrow.

I live in a middle income to low class town. Soo— Walnart is paying pretty good it seems.

Fast food jobs, working at Walmart or Sears are not the path to success.

It appears in Baraq's "new normal" 29 hours a week at one of these outfits is about all most unskilled folks can aspire to. And somehow liberals think it should pay 20 bucks an hour with silver plated benefits.

Has anyone else noticed that since Jan 2009, the term “McJobs” is never used by the MSM?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t most of these companies:

1) Provide many entry level opportunites for unskilled workers?
2) Hire many part-time people?

It appears to me that this is a veiled attempt to:

a) suggest that the minimum wage be raised; and,
b) point out how evil and unfair highly paid people and corporations that pay them are.

They pay the ‘most the least’ because they create more entry level positions than other companies.

Those jobs are not considered 'career' positions, unless someone wants to move up into management in those companies. Most folks take those jobs as transient positions, between just starting out working, and a step into a better paid position elsewhere. Either that, or they'll take a seasonal position, and these are paid base wages, as well.

Actually, if you have the ambition you CAN make a career in fast food. Back in the early 80's my Taco Bell manager made $24K/yr. Not a lot now, but back then, between herself and her husband they lived very well, brand new cars, and owned a house. Plus she got bonuses. IIRC, the district mgr. made something like 40K, which sounded like a fortune to me at the time. And his bonuses were in the several thousands.

There was a special on McDonalds a few years ago that featured a 2nd generation Mexican-American who worked his way up through the ranks from the grill, to eventually owning 6 franchises.

His "secret"? He worked 12-14 hour days, and still does.

And he doesn't sit in his office either, he mops the floor, works the cash register, and cooks.

“Single income retail workers used to be able to support their family.”

Are you kidding me?

In my over half a decade on this planet I have never known anyone who could support a family as a “retail worker”.
