Spend as much or as little time as you like. It's a resource. Get your ticket, and you are legal to transmit on the frequencies, modes, and powers that you are licensed for, even if you never transmit.

You don't have to make it a full time hobby.

Besides, with the crappy sunspot cycle, it's not very fun this peak.

The heck you say! Worked Japan on 10 Meters two weeks ago, and UAE and Qatar this past weekend on 20 Meters.

Granted, it's not like the hey-days in 1999 but it's not completely dead. Sometimes all it takes is watching the gray line and calling CQ for a bit. You'd be surprised how many folks are listening to see if there's a band opening. Once they hear someone the band pops and folks come crawling out of the woodwork.
