Electrolytic caps dry up and can turn into fuses. Maybe a blanket electrolytic replacement with new would get things rolling again and help to keep the smoke inside a bit longer?

My take after diagnosing it was exactly that, and replacing the transformer in the receiver.

Getting the transformer and finding all the caps has been more than I've been willing to do, so far. I've got a lot of other projects going.
