Soccer has them both beat. It is worse both on TV and in person.

I have been to soccer ("football") games in England. As far as I can determine, the only difference between being there and watching it on TV is the impossibility of electronically replicating the sensation of being utterly surrounded by 80,000 screaming drunken hooligans with bad breath.

Football is a much better game on TV than in person. Baseball vice versa.

Most expensive/best seat seats for watching football in person are closet to the action. Worst seats are in the nosebleed sections. Watch football on TV and they show it from the best seats in the house.

Most expensive/best seats for watching baseball in person are closest to the action, usually behind homeplate. Worst seats are in the outfield. Watch baseball on TV and they show it from the worst seats in the house.

Actually, my favorite seat in the ballpark is behind first base, about 10-20 rows up. So much of the action is "aimed" at you in those seats.

Otherwise I totally agree with you. About the only thing I really like about televised baseball is the relatively new feature of replaying an at bat in rapid sequence, pitch by pitch from the pitcher's POV.
