McGrath: There Is a Disaster Coming. Get Ready For It.
SHTF Plan ^ | 11/13/12 | Mac Salvo

Posted on 11/13/2012 9:37:39 PM PST by Kartographer

We’re talking about the potential for an absolute credit freeze that will make the situation in New York spread across this country almost overnight.

Ask yourself this question: Are you prepared to take care of yourself?

If you cannot answer that question with the affirmative it is time to stop just listening to alternative media and thinking of it as entertainment, but taking the advice seriously and considering if you have a plan to take care of yourself and loved ones if the situation arises.

Because if you look around this world, if you look at the mainstream media, they’re forewarning you about what’s coming.

There is a disaster coming. Get ready for it. Make sure you are mentally and physically prepared for what is coming.

back home to my small hometown where everyone knows each other, where I know how to find clean water and where to grow food and find temp shelter with family and friends, or where I would choose to die if that time comes

not in some beseiged abandoned suburb

Upside of using your car+inverter= modest household appliance and tool power is:
1. EASY
2. convenient
3. really portable
4. FAR quieter than most any generator of the same size. When the power is off and NOTHING else is running or moving, you can hear a typical generator for MILES. That’ll bring flies to the honey. OPSEC.

DOWNSIDE: it’s not terribly efficient from a fuel consumption standpoint v. a good generator. But see 1-4 above.

We have an 1100W portable, a 5500W semi-rollable (real-man move-able) and a 2500W Whistler inverter, fused, for the 4X4 SUV, with an extra heavy duty battery.

Some of that goes with us; some is pre-positioned.

Dittos about Johnny. One of the people on the preppers threads you would want as a friend.

A diesel truck with extra batteries is GREAT for the car-inverter “generator”.

It’s not ideal, but it sure will do in a pinch and on a budget. I did some research and your typical car alternator will only put out 750 Watts (3/4 kilowatt), but that’s plenty for running a modern freezer or refrigerator.
And you don’t have to have them constantly running.
The cheapest “power” for your freezer is to wrap it in blankets and run it for an hour every 12 hours or so. Also, keep your freezer full, even if you take up space with water jugs.

Here’s a trick to “alarm” you if your freezer has gone off for longer than it takes to thaw (even if it comes back on and re-freezes everything).

Fill a standard 1pt water bottle half full and freeze it upright. Then turn it upside down in your freezer.
If you question whether your freezer has thawed and refrozen, check the bottle. If the ice is now in the neck and conformed to the shape, the water has melted all the way and has refrozen. Even if it has “slid” but still retains the shape of the bottom, your stuff is safe because the temperature never got above freezing.

"You have to think about the contradiction of planning for a societal collapse...."

I started thinking about the series Jericho (before it went lame) - that guy and his sister owned a farm that was in financial trouble - the girl that ended up staying there was from the bank or IRS originally sent to start foreclosure - it took her awhile to figure out it didn't matter anymore....

I would consider myself to be somewhat of the prepper type.

A couple hundred pounds of food, alot of water, some electrical generation capacity.
And a few guns.

I don’t relish the idea of killing someone.

Problem is, in an SHTF scenario, any idea of believing that someone is a fellow American or a fellow Republican or even a fellow Democrat goes out the window.

EVERYONE. And that means EVERYONE that you don’t personally know, (and even some that you do personally know), must be perceived as a threat, an IMMEDIATE threat.

For me, I’m in my late 50’s. Not sure it’s worth the grief.

But I’ll tell you two things. I AIN’T gonna starve. And I AIN’T gonna freeze!

And if the spring comes, and the sun warms things up, and the evenings get soft again, I have a boatload of seeds of all types and varieties. Life could be good again, a challenge, but very rewarding.

All true with one caution:

All freezers/fridges are heat exchangers, so when you wrap it in blankets, be sure to NOT cover the heat exchanger coils or restrict airflow to them. they are usually on the back or the bottom. IF you do NOT do this, your freezer will run and run and actually HEAT UP your food.

Yeah, modern freezers have a “hot side” - one side that releases the heat - don’t cover that up.

During the event, gold and cash will be useless.

You just enjoy yourself on your little island and don’t worry about the rest of us.

As for being overrun, you have no idea of what my defenseive posture is, or that of any other on this thread.

The idea is that if you survive the event and people begin to rebuild, gold and silver will resume their time honored function as currency.

The central banks are still loading up on gold, and if you think they that run them don't have well appointed bunkers to ride out the storm, complete with well armed Wackenhut security, think again.

I don't know who you are or anything about you so I can say little about how prepared you are.

However, even not knowing that, I would far rather be stranded and knocking on JRF's front door looking for an assist than yours.

That boy has got some mad skills.

I am glad for you Alex and I truly harbor no ill will, but you show up on these threads telling us about your life and your choice, but it has no bearing on the subject unless you are advocating a vasts migration to you tropical island paradise and even you understand that’s not happening.

These threads are for the majority of us to work out plans to survive here. For many of us can’t move to live on the beach of some tropical paradise like you and many of us don’t care too.

You say you see no way to turn things around and I can see why you feel that way, but I for one won’t give up on a land seeped in the blood of my forefathers. I for one will stand.

Alex you many not know this, but there are somethings that gnaw on a man worse than dying and for me to cut and run on this country is one of those things.

I would hope you respect my choice as I respect yours, because in the end the battle is about choices and a man being free to make his.

I can only assume you are right, he does have some skills.
Reading comprehension is not one of them, thus his insistence, not mine, that he and I have this little spat.
