Notre Dame has easiest road in four-team race to BCS title game

NBC —the Notre Dame Broadcasting Company — aired “Rudy” for the 5,388th time on Saturday night. This is the movie that still gives some people chills, the ultimate Little Guy Who Did story, backed by the playing of the Notre Dame fight song 468 times.

No doubt NBC picked the first Saturday in November because it knew the Fighting Irish were playing an awful opponent earlier in the day, one that had started its season by losing to Youngstown St. Somehow, Pittsburgh almost ruined the evening for all the Irish fans before losing, 29-26, in triple overtime.

Notre Dame won because Pitt place kicker Kevin Harper pushed a 33-yard field goal wide right in the second overtime. Naturally, Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly talked about how much his team had “overcome” to win.

He’s right: His team overcame playing a bad football game and got lucky it was playing a bad football team.

And yet, it doesn’t matter: Notre Dame is 9-0 and remains one of four in contention to win the national championship.

So is Alabama! Oregon would shred the Bama defense.

Thanks, I needed a good laugh.

Thanks, I needed a good laugh.

You'll need that and a crying towel after the bowl games.

No team that gives up 51 points to another team has a defense. There is more to football than playing run and gun with other teams to see who can score the most points.

Actually, there is nothing more to football than seeing who can score the most points. To paraphrase Herm, 'Helllooooo! That's how you win the game!'

Already forget Spurrier and his 'fun and gun' offense? He routinely put up over 50 points on SEC defenses, even on LSU more than once (did in '96 when they were ranked 12th).

Bama's defense is great, but that offense is average at best. I'm hoping Oregon gets into that BCS championship game, because I think this year they have enough to give them a run.

I think ND would get handed their head (probably won't get past USC, did you watch the game against Pitt?). K-State is having a nice year, but I'd rather take Oregon's offense than theirs against 'Bama. Georgia is only going to finish the season with one loss if they beat 'Bama.

I think USC will take care of ND.

A lot of people think Stanford should have been awarded the tying TD in overtime in addition to the poor play against Pitt.

You would think that after several years of the same talk...that gets blown straight to hell in the BCS title game by whatever “Overated” SEC team that makes it there...people would learn.

I remember the 92 Sugar Bowl between a boring Bama team and the high flying Miami canes. No one gave bama a chance. It was a given the canes would roll over Bama. I got 10-12 points on every wager I made. Bama dominated from the get go.

Even though the giants beat the patriots the previous time they met up in the Super Bowl, with a better team than that game, and the pats with a slightly less talented team, the pats were still favored. Like Bama, they are strong along the lines and execute.

LOL at the posters saying how average the bama offense is. Before scoring only 21 against LSU....the next lowest point total before then was 33. Bama’s qb has yet to throw an int. Bama’s oline is better than the bottom third of NFL teams.

LOL at those that say Bama’s defense can be had.LSU scored the most points against them of any team this season...17. Good luck shredding that monster.

I ain’t no bama fan. I’m a football fan that makes side money off people with misconceptions just like many on this thread. But it’s obvious many here are clueless about Bama and Saban. Here’s a few on the house.

They are big, deep and talented along both lines. The oline is the better unit this year...but the defensive front is a very talented deep group.

Saban’s bama teams all share some common triats. They don’t get fancy with gameplans...they don’t try to out scheme or out think you...they do not throw for ungodly pass yards. Their style does not get them on highlight reels.

What they do is execute....time after time..play after play. They do not miss blocks, tackles, coverages, run gaps, or reads. They do not get stupid 15 yard penalties. They do not showboat. They out work and out execute you....until the brutal beating both of their lines have been putting on the other team starts really taking effect late in the game...then they finish you off.

I aint saying Oregon or ND can’t beat Bama....I’m saying it’s a very low percentage bet to think so.
But y’all kepp thinking like you do....daddy needs some extra cash for the new nikon and a kayak funds.

Man, you don’t have to be anti-catholic to hate Notre Dame.

Rinky dink Boise State.

There is absolutely nothing "Rinky dink" about Boise State football. The mighty Oklahoma Sooners can attest to that. I believe many teams schedule one time home and home games with non-conference opponents.
