Sean Bean was OK, but he’s faded so much in my memory that as GOPster said, he’s become unmemorable. I think the female villains are far more stand-outs. Famke’s Xenia Onatopp having an orgasm while gunning down people was a jaw-dropper. It seems like you can do things with female villains now you couldn’t get away with in a male villain today.
I don’t think I could’ve shot Sophie, she’s just too hot (and to quote her character to Bond, I’d miss her too much). Seeing her in the scenes with the “evil” Carlyle, it was just embarrassing. She was far more sadistic to the man responsible for her Stockholm Syndrome than he could portray as a menacing character (indeed, you almost felt sorry for him - although perhaps that brought an added dimension to him, I’m not sure that’s something I wanted to see in him... made him too weak). Another problem with Carlyle is that he has such a working-class guy persona, it’s like you’d run into someone like him at your local bar/pub. I prefer the bigger-than-life types.
I know a lot of folks loathe “A View To A Kill”, but I think Christopher Walken was magnificent as Zorin. He’s probably the last to portray an old-fashioned villain. If they had cut some of the silly stuff out, sacked the pretty-but-vacant Tanya Roberts in favor of beefing up the role of the gorgeous Fiona Fullerton and replacing a too-old Rog for Timothy Dalton, this could’ve easily become one of the top 3 films in the entire franchise.
As for Javier Bardem, I think it will be singularly impossible for him to top Anton Chigurh. If he was reprising Chigurh (who didn’t die at the end), that would be great.
