As a Michigander who has worked in the auto industry I know that bankruptcy would have been better for the company than this bailout crap.

Traditional chapter 11 style bankruptcy would have allowed cutting out the deadwood instead of trying to save it at the expense of the whole tree. GM is in a far more precarious position today than it was before the bailout.

Banruptcy is simply a way for perfectly useful assets to be placed into the hands of more responsible, better positioned owners.

It's a way of telling someone "you've lost, now move over".

The Obamista trip to the well was a failure. The assets were handed over to some of the same people who'd been putting the company under. The new regime needs to go immediately to the courts and have it done right ~
