What about a short round soft tip large caliber revolver cartridge—say like in the .44 Bulldog the Son of Sam used?

Stopping power is a must and the round should go no farther than the crook's body.

The .45 ACP is not known for collateral damage but I prefer the reliability of a revolver in a home invasion situation

The .45 ACP actually penetrates rather well. The .44 Special isn’t a bad choice- I’ve fired the 210gr-HP round and shattered it on a tin window flowerbox.
