This is the same thing that came up during the Republican primaries. Good candidates and good presidents don't grow on trees. They're hard to find. We don't know who'd be a good president until after the fact. And good candidates don't always make good presidents, and vice versa.

The Dems went with somebody they thought could win, and he did win. One reason he won is that he didn't have much of a record. He never really had to shoulder the responsibilities that other politicians have to deal with -- and often fail to deal with, ruining their careers.

So, sure, when Obama got in and had to deal with real problems, he failed, but who was the great Democrat who would have changed everything for them? Edwards, Biden, Dodd, Dean, Kucinich -- could any of them have won and made a decent president? Not so likely.

I guess Hillary would have been the other choice. Probably -- with all that was going on in the Fall of 2008 -- she would have won the election, but how good a president would she have been?

Like I said during the primaries when everyone was talking about the great (non-existent) conservative candidate who could have trounced Romney and then Obama: you can't beat somebody with nobody.

All true. I think almost any dem candidate without a dead body in their trunk would have beaten McCain in ‘08 because of the media’s constant attacks on Bush. IMO, that is who Obama was really running against the first time around, simply because McCain’s persona could not transcend his mediocrity as a candidate.

As for this election, I may be getting ahead of myself as some others have posted, but I’m just hoping some democrats actually do read this (and get more depressed than usual) and don’t vote.

My primary vote here in FL went to Gingrich, fwiw.
